Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of hotels in Perth, and The Melbourne Hotel on Milligan Street is one of those places that actually gets it right. Walking up to the entrance, you immediately notice they’ve managed to blend that classic hotel elegance with something that feels genuinely Australian – not the touristy kind, but the sort of understated quality you’d expect from a proper 5-star place.
The location is honestly perfect if you know Perth at all. Milligan Street puts you right in the thick of the CBD without being on one of those crazy busy main drags where you can’t sleep past 6 AM. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Murray Street Mall, and if you’re into good coffee (and really, who isn’t in this city?), there’s this little place called Toby’s Estate just around the corner that the locals actually go to. The hotel staff mentioned it when I was checking in – which, by the way, was refreshingly smooth. No standing around for twenty minutes while they “find your reservation.”
What really impressed me was how they handle the details that matter. The rooms are spacious by Perth standards, and I mean genuinely spacious, not that marketing speak where they call a shoebox “cozy.” The beds are fantastic – I’m usually a light sleeper, but I slept like a rock even though we were right in the city center. The soundproofing is clearly something they invested in properly. There’s also decent parking underneath, which honestly saves you a headache if you’re driving around Perth. Street parking in the CBD is pretty much a nightmare, especially during business hours.
The service has that relaxed Australian vibe without being sloppy about it. Staff actually seem to know the area well – they pointed me toward some great spots for dinner that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. One thing I appreciated was how they handle the breakfast situation. It’s not one of those massive buffets where half the food sits under heat lamps getting sad, but rather a more curated setup with genuinely good coffee and fresh local ingredients. You can tell they work with suppliers who know what they’re doing.
I stayed during one of Perth’s busier conference seasons, and while the hotel was clearly full, it never felt chaotic or understaffed. The elevators run smoothly, the lobby doesn’t turn into a zoo, and room service actually shows up when they say they will. These might sound like basic things, but you’d be surprised how many supposedly high-end places mess up the fundamentals.
The 8.3 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town, but it delivers consistently on what actually matters when you’re traveling. Whether you’re in Perth for business or just exploring, you’ll find yourself well-positioned to get around the city easily. The weather in Perth can be unpredictable, so having a comfortable base where everything just works is worth paying for. It’s the kind of place I’d book again without hesitation, which is probably the best compliment I can give any hotel.

Guest Reviews
Very good
Location
Enjoyable
What could be improved: Bedside lights weren't working.
Great little find in Perth
Fabulous location. Great fir Perth Conference centre and lots of eateries
What could be improved: Nothing
Perfect location for a city stay.
Excellent location, fantastic heritage building and large comfortable rooms.
What could be improved: Shower pressure was a little inconsistent but not a deal breaker.
We would recommend this hotel but go elsewhere for breakfast.
Location was excellent. Breakfast was tasteless and cold when serve.
Very clean and comfortable rooms.
Apart from those two things, we enjoyed our stay!
We love this hotel, it’s so central to everything in Perth. It still has old fashioned charm and a more personal feel. We were in one of the suites in the original part of the hotel which was lovely.
What could be improved: Just a couple of things, the shower head was hanging off at an angle which made it tricky to shower.
When I stripped the bed down (which I
like to do before leaving) I noticed the mattress protector was very stained, as was the mattress 🙁
Happy stay
Great location. Excellent location. Happy friendly staff, highly recommend this hotel.
What could be improved: Nothing
The stay was lovely but we felt a bit down by the service desk as they weren’t really clear. We got different staffs fro
The hotel itself is amazing, modern and pretty new.
What could be improved: The pillows were really bad. My friend and I woke up with sore necks
Great experience to complement a successful State if Origin trip from Queensland.
Hotel was centrally located and serviced every day to make the stay comfortable and like being at home. All facilities within the room were first class and adequate for our stay.
What could be improved: Nothing to dislike apart from some ordinary weather outside !!!
A gem in Perth City, great location and comfortable stay
The location is great, near city, just a short walk to Murray St, rooms were clean, comfortable and classy, bed is clean and comfy
What could be improved: There is no supermarket nearby
