Overview
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked into the Mercure Perth on Irwin Street – honestly, it looks pretty understated from the outside, sort of blending into the CBD streetscape. But there’s something refreshing about a hotel that doesn’t try too hard to impress you in the lobby and then actually delivers where it counts.
The location is genuinely fantastic, though I wish more people realized it. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Perth Cultural Centre (the art gallery and museum are right there), and if you’re into coffee – which, let’s be honest, in Perth you have to be – there’s this little laneway system just behind the hotel where you’ll find some seriously good cafes that most tourists completely miss. I mean, you could stay at one of those flashy places down by the river and spend half your morning getting into the city center, or you could just walk out the front door here and be in the thick of things. The train station’s close enough that you can hear the announcements if your window’s open, but it’s not annoying noise – more like gentle city hum.
What I really appreciate about this place is that it feels like they’ve figured out the basics without getting distracted by unnecessary fancy stuff. The rooms are clean and comfortable – not Instagram-worthy, but honestly refreshing after staying at places that prioritize aesthetics over function. The beds are actually decent (I’m picky about this), and the air conditioning works properly, which becomes crucial during those February heat waves when Perth turns into a furnace. The bathrooms are small but well-designed, and there’s enough power outlets that you won’t be doing that awkward dance of unplugging the lamp to charge your phone. Parking can be a bit of a headache in this part of the city, but they’ve got arrangements that make it less painful than trying to figure out street parking around here – trust me on this one.
The staff seems to know their stuff too, which makes a difference when you’re trying to navigate Perth’s somewhat quirky public transport system or figure out which beaches are worth the trip. They’re not overly chatty, but they’ll give you proper directions instead of just pointing vaguely down the street. I’ve stayed here a few times over the years, and there’s a consistency that’s hard to find – it’s not trying to be the most luxurious place in town, but it’s reliable in a way that frequent travelers learn to value. The 7.1 rating makes sense to me; it’s not perfect, but it does what it promises without the pretense. If you’re looking for something central, comfortable, and straightforward – especially if you actually want to explore Perth rather than just hide in your hotel – this place gets it right.

Guest Reviews
Comfort for a low budget
Was pretty good for the price and comfortable we had a good sleep. Which I think the facilities overall were very reasonable for the price
What could be improved: The shower pressure was low. also the room didn’t have a phone so I could call room service. the Buffett breakfast at the hotel restaurant Beccaria was terrible most of the food was cold (sausages were literally cold and looked like they weren’t cooked) other things luke warm and clearly not fresh, when I told this to staff they didn’t even change any of it which I’m pretty sure it was not in line with food safety laws and hot food holding times and temperatures , it was still 8am in the morning , I chose not to eat any and only had toast as I’m pregnant but I still paid.
Great stay for the price
The location was very convenient
Very good
Room was clean, very comfortable beds ( medium soft) and pillows
What could be improved: Lifts are very small, they move when you step in and we had 1 experience where the lift wouldn't go to our floor, another couple got in the lift with us and it wouldn't go to there floor either, it eventually went to the lobby and we got out and changed lifts.
The buffet breakfast needs a re fresh
Great deal with valet parking and breakfast suited perfectly
Disappointed no bar or restaurant open . Food from room service not great . Staff very helpful and location great .
Good
it was to expectations for the price. Comfportable and reasonably quiet
What could be improved: nothing
Very relaxing, and great staff.
The rooms clean and so spacious and great view. The bed was very comfortable.
What could be improved: Nothing I was very happy.
Clean room, fresh sheets, nice pool and close to the Bell Tower, all the requirements I needed.
The staff were polite and efficient. The bed had nice clean linen and was comfortable and the bathroom was clean.
A nice located hotel but room for improvement
The hotels location is very good. The staff are also very good but the hotel rooms are tired in places and could do with an update.
The hotel car parking was a bit excessive with the price of $45 per night!! You would have thought that car parking for guests would be free.
What could be improved: As above also the restaurant would have been nice to use if it had been open!!
Great pool, great staff, room a bit tired
Good
What could be improved: The room needed painting and new carpet.
Great room, pool and breakfast, bathrooms need upgrading
The room was a good size, and the beds were comfortable.
Buffet breakfast was tasty and great, lots of choice.
Rooftop pool was lovely.
Short walk to the CBD shops and the free CAT buses to travel around the city for free.
What could be improved: The bathrooms could definitely do with an upgrade but functional.
Rooftop pool needed more shaded areas/umbrellas, the seated/shaded area next to it was closed off, possibly for refurbishment?
Our keycard in the lift didn't work after the normal check out time when we had a late check out till 2pm, a few other guests had problems with this too.
