Overview
You know what hit me first when I pulled up to Scarborough Sunsets? The name actually makes sense – I mean, you’re literally on Stanley Street, which is basically a stone’s throw from the beach, and those Western Australian sunsets are absolutely ridiculous from this spot. I’ve stayed at plenty of places that promise ocean proximity but deliver a view of a parking lot, but this one’s the real deal.
The thing about Scarborough is that it’s having this whole renaissance moment – used to be a bit rough around the edges, but now it’s got this cool surf town vibe without losing its laid-back character. Scarborough Sunsets sits right in the sweet spot where you can walk to the beach in about three minutes (I timed it), but you’re not dealing with the chaos of the main esplanade. Stanley Street’s quiet enough that you’ll actually sleep through the night, which honestly surprised me because Perth beach areas can get pretty lively. The staff at check-in mentioned they’ve got soundproofing in the rooms facing the street, and I guess it works because I didn’t hear a thing.
What really sold me on this place – and I’m picky about hotels, ask anyone – is how they’ve nailed the details without being fussy about it. The rooms have this sort of modern coastal thing going on, but it doesn’t feel like they hired some decorator to shove seashells everywhere. Actually feels like a place where locals might stay when their relatives visit, you know? The bathroom’s got one of those rain showers that actually has decent pressure (you’d be amazed how many places mess this up), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without playing Tetris with your suitcase. Oh, and the air conditioning works properly – crucial for those summer months when Perth decides to turn into a furnace.
The location’s honestly perfect if you want to experience Scarborough without being stuck in the tourist bubble. You’ve got Scarborough Beach right there, obviously, but you’re also close enough to walk to some of the local spots that don’t make it into the guidebooks. There’s this little café around the corner that does proper flat whites, and the IGA’s just down the road if you need to grab supplies. Plus, if you’re planning to explore other parts of Perth, you’re not trapped – the train station’s walkable, and parking around here isn’t the nightmare it is in some beach suburbs.
I’ll be honest, the only minor thing I’d change is maybe adding a few more hooks in the bathroom – always seems like there’s never enough space to hang wet towels and swimwear when you’re doing the beach thing. But that’s being nitpicky. For a four-star place, Scarborough Sunsets delivers exactly what it promises, and in my experience, that’s rarer than it should be. The perfect rating makes sense once you’ve stayed here – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place on the coast, but it absolutely nails being a comfortable, well-located spot where you can actually relax and enjoy Scarborough the way it’s meant to be enjoyed.
