Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Scarborough Family Retreat on Gildercliffe Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address is tucked away from the main beach drag, which actually turned out to be perfect because you’re not dealing with all that weekend chaos down near the Esplanade, but you’re still close enough to walk to the beach in about five minutes.
What really got me was how thoughtfully this place is set up for families – and I mean actually thoughtful, not just “we threw some bunk beds in a room and called it family-friendly.” The owners clearly understand what traveling with kids is like. There’s proper space to spread out, decent kitchen facilities (because let’s face it, eating out every meal with little ones gets expensive fast), and honestly, the soundproofing between units is surprisingly good. I was worried about disturbing other guests when my toddler had his inevitable 6 AM meltdown, but the staff mentioned they get it – families need space to just be families. The location on Gildercliffe is residential enough that parking isn’t a nightmare like it can be closer to the beach, and you’re actually walking distance to that IGA on West Coast Highway when you inevitably realize you forgot to pack half the stuff you need.
You know what really impressed me though? The little details that show someone who runs this place has actually traveled with kids themselves. Proper blackout curtains (game changer for afternoon naps), bathtubs that are actually deep enough for bath time, and – this might sound silly but it mattered – enough power outlets in sensible places so you’re not crawling around unplugging lamps to charge devices. The whole setup feels like staying at a really well-organized relative’s house rather than a sterile hotel room. I mean, Scarborough can get pretty hectic during school holidays and summer weekends, but being just off the main strip on Gildercliffe means you get the benefits of being close to everything without feeling like you’re camping out in the middle of a carnival. Walking down to the beach, you pass some lovely older houses with proper gardens – gives you a sense of what the area was like before it became such a tourist hub. The staff genuinely seem to care about making sure families have what they need, and they’re full of practical local knowledge about things like which playground is best for which age group, where to find decent coffee early in the morning, and how to time your beach visits to avoid the worst crowds.

Guest Reviews
Exceptional
Location was ideal, close to Karrinyup Shopping Centre, several beaches and 10 mins to Perth City. Charmaine had everything that was needed at this fabulous modern house. Very spacious, immaculately clean. Can honestly say there was nothing additional we could have asked for.
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was perfect. A shame to have to leave.
