Overview
You know what struck me first about Shell Thirteen? It’s actually right there on the beach – and I mean *right there*, not like those places that claim beachfront but you’re still hiking five minutes through sand dunes. You step out of the lobby and boom, there’s Scarborough Beach spreading out in front of you. The whole setup feels more like a collection of upscale apartments than a traditional hotel, which honestly works in its favor. Each unit has this airy, lived-in vibe that makes you feel like you’re crashing at a friend’s place rather than checking into some sterile chain property.
The location is pretty much perfect if you’re planning to spend time on the beach (which, let’s be honest, why else would you stay in Scarborough?). You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main strip along The Esplanade where all the cafes and restaurants are, but far enough away that you don’t get the late-night party noise from the backpacker crowd. I mean, Scarborough can get pretty rowdy on weekends – it’s basically Perth’s answer to a beach party town – but Shell Thirteen sits just south of the main action, so you get the best of both worlds. The surf break right out front is decent too, nothing spectacular, but you’ll see locals out there most mornings catching waves before work.
What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail in the rooms themselves. The kitchenettes are actually functional (I’m talking full-size fridges and proper cooking equipment), which is a godsend when you’re staying more than a couple nights. The balconies face different directions depending on which unit you get, and while the ocean-facing ones are obviously prime real estate, even the side-view rooms aren’t bad – you still catch glimpses of the water and get those amazing Perth sunsets. The whole complex has this relaxed, residential feel that works especially well for families or couples on longer stays.
Honestly, the 7.8 rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it delivers exactly what it promises. The pool area is small but well-maintained, and there’s usually a decent breeze coming off the ocean that keeps things comfortable even in summer. Parking can be a bit tight during peak season (December through February gets absolutely packed), but they’ve got designated spots for guests. Check-in is pretty straightforward, though the front desk isn’t staffed 24/7, so don’t expect midnight concierge service. What you do get is a genuinely comfortable base for exploring Perth’s best beach suburb, with the added bonus of being able to walk to decent coffee in the morning and fish and chips for dinner without getting in a car.

Guest Reviews
Excellent little getaway spot.
Comfortable, well equipped and with a very gracious host. Lovely sunset view out over the sea. Walking distance to Cole’s and the Perth transit bus to glendalough tube station.
What could be improved: The shower is rather temperamental and requires patience and nuanced finagling to get to a decent temp. Relatively minor inconvenience though.
Very good
What could be improved: Limited parking available on premises.
Great location, great apartment.
What could be improved: Air con was quite old in the master bedroom and didn't cool to the temperature set on the remote. The two smaller bedrooms had no airconditioning and were very hot and there was only one fan in one bedroom.
Very good
Great apartment on the beach. Close walk to everything. Loved Scarbrough.
Overall the time spent was perfect for what our family needed.
The location was fantastic
What could be improved: Apartment was not very clean bathroom & Kitchen and floors. Bedding, towels were clean.
A very relaxing and enjoyable experience
Simple, clean, comfortable and convenient
What could be improved: N/A
We had a pleasant stay. I would go back for sure 😊
I liked the location and the beds were really comfty 😊
What could be improved: A up to date stove and oven would of been more sufficient
Once entry into apartment issues had been rectified stay was good.
Location was perfect for us. We traveled from the SW for Swimming Country championships in Perth.
What could be improved: We had trouble entering the apartment when we arrived. Several conversations with the property manager were not helpful particularly “you are free to go and stay elsewhere “ when the booking had been made 3 1/2 months prior as we knew that it is a busy weekend for regional swimming as well it being summer. Eventually got in by asking a service worker who assisted by using a key as well as the passcode.
very enjoyable
very clean, great location, everything you need in the apartment
Great location, the unit exceeds our expectations and the staff very welcoming
The unit was really well appointed - kitchen really good.Kids loved the tv in their bedroom! balcony great to sit out on and watch the sunset .
What could be improved: The walkway to the unit is very poorly lit and with the stairs and wet weather a bit dangerous
