Overview
So I’ve stayed at the Oaks Perth Hotel a handful of times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just gets it right without trying too hard. The building sits right on Murray Street – you know, that stretch where the CBD actually feels alive – and when you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that you’re dealing with people who understand what travelers actually need, not what some corporate manual says they need.
The rooms are what I’d call “properly comfortable” – not trying to wow you with unnecessary gadgets, but everything works the way it should. The beds are actually good (I mean, really good, not hotel-marketing good), and the bathrooms have that satisfying water pressure that makes you realize how many places get this basic thing wrong. What I really appreciate is how quiet it stays, even though you’re literally in the middle of everything. Murray Street can get pretty buzzy during the day, but somehow the rooms just… insulate you from all that chaos. The air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine either, which – trust me – matters more than you think when you’re trying to sleep off jetlag.
Location-wise, this is where the Oaks really shines, though they don’t make a big deal about it. You’re basically a five-minute walk from the Perth Underground station, which connects you to Fremantle if you want to hit the markets or just escape the city for a few hours. Northbridge is close enough that you can wander over for dinner without committing to a whole expedition, and if you need groceries or just want to people-watch, the pedestrian mall area is right there. I’ve found myself grabbing coffee from that little place on the corner of Murray and Barrack more times than I can count – it’s become part of my Perth routine, honestly.
The staff here operates with this refreshing lack of fuss. Check-in is quick, they remember your name without being weirdly over-familiar, and when you need something, they just… handle it. No corporate scripts, no trying to upsell you on spa packages. It’s the kind of service that makes you realize how exhausting most hotel interactions can be. The concierge actually knows the city too – like, really knows it, not just the tourist stuff. They’ve pointed me toward hole-in-the-wall restaurants and told me which markets are worth the trip, the kind of intel you usually only get from locals.
Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with Instagram-worthy design or rooftop infinity pools. The Oaks is more about doing the fundamentals really well, and after staying in plenty of places that prioritize flash over function, I find that approach pretty refreshing. It’s the kind of hotel that makes Perth feel manageable and welcoming, especially if you’re here for business or just want a solid base for exploring without the drama. The 4-star rating feels right – comfortable and reliable without any pretense about being something it’s not.
