Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to the Indian Ocean Hotel on Hastings Street, you immediately get that relaxed beachside vibe that makes Scarborough such a draw for couples and travelers looking to unwind. This three-and-a-half-star property doesn’t try to be something it’s not — it’s honest, comfortable, and perfectly positioned for exploring Perth’s coastal scene. The building itself has that classic Australian beach hotel feel, and honestly, the fact that there’s free parking right on-site is already a win in my book.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re literally steps away from Scarborough Beach, which has transformed into one of Perth’s premier coastal destinations over the past few years. The esplanade redevelopment means you’ve got fantastic cafes, bars, and restaurants within walking distance, plus that gorgeous stretch of white sand beach. I mean, couples consistently rate this location 8.8 out of 10, and after spending time here, I totally get why. You can grab your morning coffee, hit the beach for a swim, and be back in your room within minutes.
The Accommodation Experience
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid mid-range hotel — clean, comfortable, and functional without any unnecessary frills. What actually impressed me was how well-maintained everything felt, from the air conditioning (crucial during Perth summers) to the decent-sized windows that let in plenty of natural light. You’re not getting five-star luxury here, but you are getting genuine value for money, especially considering that prime location. The beds are comfortable enough that you’ll actually want to sleep in after a day exploring the coast. Each room is thoughtfully designed to maximize comfort and convenience.
Dining & Local Scene
While the hotel itself keeps things simple on the dining front, you’re spoiled for choice in the surrounding area. The Scarborough Beach redevelopment brought in some seriously good restaurant options — from casual fish and chips joints to more upscale spots with ocean views. I’d recommend wandering down to the beach amphitheater area in the evening; there’s often live music and the sunset views are honestly spectacular. Plus, having that free parking means you can easily drive to Fremantle or Perth city center if you want to explore further afield.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the fanciest hotel you’ll ever stay in, but it nails the fundamentals that actually matter when you’re traveling. The location is genuinely excellent — recent guests consistently rave about it, and I can see why. You’re getting beach access, great local amenities, and a base that works whether you’re here for romance, relaxation, or exploring Perth’s coastal offerings. The fact that couples keep coming back and rating their experience so highly tells you everything you need to know about what this place delivers. It’s a destination that truly understands its guests.

Guest Reviews
Back remains sore
Location
What could be improved: Spa bath was really small they said on phone fits 4 barely fit 2.
Other than the above comments, the bed was very comfy and the service downstairs was good
Location was great, staff were lovely
What could be improved: I dont understand why we had a bedroom that had the bed against the window making very hard for me to get in and out and no bedside table, when I looked at the other open doors if other bedrooms they had a bigger room.
Also the noise was very high from other guests all three nights, it would be good if they were reminded to be courteous when returning to their room.
Love the place.. the 70’s vibe and comfortable
The 70’s theme
What could be improved: Nothing
Clean rooms staff friendly
Location
Pleasant and fun vibe. A step back in time.
Full on authentic retro decor and vibe
What could be improved: Layout of bathroom made toilet awkward to use
Good
Noisy at the weekend
Good
We stayed here as the location was situated where a bus pick up was organised for a concert.
What could be improved: The hotel is very old and the price for the room was very high compared to others in the city. We were unable to access our room before 12 pm. We had to collect our bag from our car at 11.15pm and collect a key to access our room. The room was clean, and the a/c was really efficient. Comfortable beds.
Very good
One of the best 3* hotel I have ever been. Oldish style with vibe. I like it. Comfy bed, quite big room with balcony. Close to Scarborough beach. Clean bathroom.
I guess it’s “you get what you pay for” but my stay on the weekend was quite lovely
The ladies staff are lovely and hospitable. Beds are very comfortable. I liked a lot that my parents and myself were hosted so well on the next booking from 20-22th Feb where we needed a second bed.
What could be improved: The bathroom I stayed in during this one night stay had no light switch. Hence I had to shower in the dark with small light shadowed from the entrance door. The bathroom tiles could do a redo.
Good
Clean but dated.
