Overview
You know what caught me off guard about the Wonil Hotel Perth? It’s tucked away on Hackett Drive in what feels like a proper neighborhood rather than some sterile hotel district. I mean, you’re still close to everything that matters, but there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that doesn’t scream “tourist trap” the moment you pull up.
The whole “Handwritten Collection” thing isn’t just marketing fluff – they’ve actually put thought into making each room feel different. Mine had these quirky little touches, like locally-sourced artwork that wasn’t your typical generic hotel prints, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you genuinely don’t want to get up in the morning. The staff seems to know everyone by name pretty quickly too, which is rare for a 4-star place that’s busy enough to maintain an 8.1 rating. Check-in was smooth – none of that awkward waiting around while they figure out their system.
What I really appreciated was how they handle the practical stuff without making a big deal about it. Parking is actually sorted (and free, which is getting rarer in Perth), the rooms are properly soundproofed so you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway, and the wifi doesn’t mysteriously disappear when you need it most. The location on Hackett Drive means you’re close enough to Fremantle that you can easily duck down there for dinner, but far enough from the main tourist chaos that you can actually relax. I walked to a decent coffee shop in the morning – there’s this little place about three blocks away that the front desk recommended, and it was exactly the kind of local spot you’d never find on your own. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel where people are actually going about their daily business, not just catering to visitors. If you’re here during peak season, book ahead because they seem to stay pretty full, but even when busy, the service doesn’t feel rushed or impersonal like some places get.

Guest Reviews
Very good
Walking distance to the University of Western Australia; design of the room and especially the bathroom; breakfast included
What could be improved: The maintenance staff entered the room while I was away even though I hung the "do not disturb" sign and left a bottle of bathroom cleanser
Highly recommended
Beautiful rooms and views from balcony
Staff were accommodating
What could be improved: I arranged a parking spot but they did not have that on file however the lady was lovely and took care of us , was also supposed to get a complimentary bottle of wine ( arranged on phone call) but that was not in the room unfortunately!
Would love if there were robes too
Good
Great location. The bed is comfortable. Beautiful place. Quiet and serene.
What could be improved: The sink is too small and not practical. Day bed is so near the curtain, it is not functional.
Elegant and great location
Elegant , good location and nice views
What could be improved: Could not shut the door between the toilet and bedroom
Fabulous stay
Location was perfect for a wedding on the reserve. Easy to get to by Uber and the Purple CAT bus was free and an easy way to get in and out of the city - stop is just down the road - an easy 5 min walk. Balcony suite looking over the river recommended - just lovely and relaxing.
What could be improved: Buffet breakfast had good variety - service was a bit hahazard - long wait, mixed up order, meals served long time apart
Very good
Breakfast was lovely. Our only complaint was the parking wasn’t adequate always full and no room for us. The restaurant was closed on Monday night when advertised as open .
Great facilities and location
Very good
- location
- room itself
- views
What could be improved: - instructions for wifi password etc
Beautiful but not a 4-star
Property was very beautifully designed and has an amazing view from the reception
What could be improved: The layout of the hotel is quite strange and it smelt like previously
When I arrived I waited 40 minutes to check in and while I was offered a water while I waited once the reception staff arrived I didn’t even get an apology for the lateness
At breakfast my order was forgotten and took an hour for me to have my food. The breakfast buffet didn’t have many nice options
Superb
Wonderful location. Beautiful clean and modern room. Excellent restaurant on site. Lovely Decor
What could be improved: Nothing, except in email communications the response time to inquires seems to happen only with the late afternoon/ evening staff.
Just be prepared and don't panic if it takes a a bit to hear from them
They do respond, and are informative and helpful.
Gorgeous staycation
Beautiful interiors, beautiful location and views. Felt very special. Overall love the vibe of the hotel.
What could be improved: It was a hassle to have to park off the premises. The cooked breakfast wasn’t great and we went down in the last half an hour and the staff were genuinely grumpy at us for doing so which dampened the experience. We got so hot at night and had no clue how to use the aircon. A few downfalls that could easily be improved on.
